The Department of Public Works (973-595-5911) is under the direction of Angelo Passafaro, Superintendent. It is responsible for the maintenance of all local roads, parks, right-of-ways, and water lines. Haledon has approximately 21 miles of roads. The department provides curbside collection of garbage and recyclables. Also, there is a drive-thru Recycling Center located at 510 Belmont Avenue, which is open everyday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. GARBAGE REGULATIONS - Curbside pickup schedule: East Side of the Borough - Monday and Wednesday; West Side of the Borough - Tuesday and Friday
- Each household is limited to placement of three (3) receptacles per collection.
- Solid Waste containers shall be strong, water tight, metal, plastic covers, which shall be kept in place. Containers shall have an opening of at least 20 inches.
- Tightly closed plastic bags may also be used provided they are designed for waste disposal and have sufficient strength strength to maintain physical integrity when lifted by the top and shall have a capacity of not more than 30 gallons and they should be protected so as to prevent animals from gaining access animal access to their contents.
- Containers cannot be placed at curbside before 4PM on the day prior to collections.
- Containers must be removed from the curb by 8PM the day of collection.
- Garbage cans or plastic bags must be stored in the rear of the dwelling, business or commercial building.
- Garbage or recyclable materials not set out according to the rules and regulations of Borough Ordinances will not be picked up and will be liable for a warning notice or a summons.
- Leaves, Grass and Brush - leaves must be raked or blown at curbside or placed in biodegradable bags sold as cost in the Borough Office. Schedule for pick-up will be made available in October.
- Grass is also a recyclable item that can no longer be left at curbside for garbage collection. Alternatives are mulching, backyard composting or "cut and leave it" a procedure Passaic County Office on Recycling has mandated.
- Lawn contractors who maintain lawns in Haledon cannot leave grass clipping at curbside.
- Wood, lumber and tree branches should be cut into 3 ft. length and tied in small bundles no heavier than thirty-five lbs. with limbs a maximum thickness of three inches. Christmas trees are acceptable without plastic covers.
- No building materials, cinderblock, sheetrock, earth or stone, etc. will be picked up.
- Appliances, stoves, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, microwave ovens, washers, dryers, hot water tanks and plumbing fixtures are not collected by the Borough. Call the Municipal Clerk's office for information on how to discard these items, 973-595-7766.
- Any tenant, occupants, landlord or property owner who needs removal of garbage, rubbish, furniture or debris left by tenants or from basement, attic, garage, yard or other interior place must make arrangements for removal with a private scavenger and be responsible for the performance of this special arrangement. When discarding furniture rugs and mattresses, an effort should be made to:
- contact a charitable organization to offer any furniture that is in in good condition.
- buy household appliances, rugs or mattresses from business that will accept and remove without charge for such items.

- Scrap metal All recyclables marked with an * can be placed together in the special containers provided at the Recycling Center. (When separated from newspaper, tonnage is delivered to a local market with no fee charged.)
- All bottles and cans MUST be rinsed.
- Remove all caps and corks.
- Do not crush bottles or cans. Plastic bottles can be crushed.
- Do not place nay recyclables at curbside in plastic bags or cardboard boxes.
- Commingled glass, aluminum beverage cans, tin food cans and plastics, must be placed in either metal or strong plastic containers or pails, preferable with handles so that contents can be easily dumped out. Weight should not exceed thirty pounds.

CURBSIDE RECYCLING SCHEDULE
1st WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH Newspapers, magazines, junk mail, office paper, and catalogs. Place in paper bags, no plastic bags.
2nd WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH Cardboard and corrugated cardboard must be flattened and ties. Cereal boxes, etc.
3rd WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH (East side of town) Commingled glass bottles, glass jars and jugs, aluminum cans, tin food cans and plastics #1 & #2 (water, milk, detergent and soda bottles). These commingled recyclables are for all household who normally have garbage collections on Monday and Thursdays.
4th WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH (West side of town) Commingled glass bottles, glass jars and jugs, aluminum cans, tin food cans and plastics #1 & #2 (water, milk, detergent and soda bottles). These commingled recyclables are for all households who normally have garbage collections on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Besides the curbside collection program, residents are asked to utilize the drop-off center for their recyclables
All business establishments are required to drop off their recyclables at the center.

Scrap Metal - Small appliances (toasters, fry pans, irons, metal pots and pans or other metal parts, hot water heaters, dryers, dishwashers, stoves, air conditioners, refrigerators, computers).
Used Motor Oil, Household Batteries, Car Batteries, Tires (fee charged) Clothes, shoes, hats, bedspreads, draperies and other dry goods in two bins at the center.
