Traffic Division

The Traffic Division plays a vital role in ensuring traffic safety and enforcement. This division handles various tasks, including conducting RADAR speed enforcement, maintaining safety in work zones, and supervising the activities of Class I and Class II Special Law Enforcement Officers (Special Police Officers), School Crossing Guards, and the Community Emergency Response Team. It is also responsible for managing traffic grants, as well as planning and coordinating special events that involve traffic control and safety measures.


The Traffic Division operates under the direction, supervision, and support of the Commander of the Field Operations Bureau. The Traffic Division is responsible for overseeing traffic safety and enforcement within our jurisdiction. Its duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Coordinating extra RADAR speed enforcement details

  • Ensuring work zone safety

  • Managing the activities of Class I and Class II Special Law Enforcement Officers (Special Police Officers)

  • Overseeing School Crossing Guards and the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

Additionally, THE TRAFFIC DIVISION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR OVERSEEING TRAFFIC GRANTS, AS WELL AS PLANNING AND ORGANIZING SPECIAL EVENTS THAT REQUIRE AN INCIDENT ACTION PLAN, traffic management, and safety protocols. Responsibilities also include:

  • Handicapped parking enforcement

  • Bicycle Patrol operations

  • Aggressive driving initiatives

  • Distracted driving enforcement

  • DWI patrols

  • DMV checkpoints

  • Pedestrian safety initiatives

  • Parking regulations

  • Other related traffic duties as required

The Traffic Division Commander attendS monthly Traffic Association meetingS and submitS a monthly written report to the Office of Police Administration detailing the division’s MONTHLY activities.
